“We cannot become what we want to be by remaining what we are.” – Max Depree
I love this quote. I think everyone feels the strain of letting go of who they were to become who they want to be at some point in their life. I know this is something I struggled with a lot after graduating college.
Most would agree that it is a difficult transition from being a full time student to a full time employee embarking on your career path. I remember an overwhelming feeling and necessity to be professional and mature, but a reality that I was still young and should enjoy life to the fullest. It was hard to find a balance of letting go of the party girl to become a professional working woman.
I think the most important thing to keep in mind as we go through these transitions in our lives is that balance is key. We have to find a way to easy into new chapters without letting go of who we once were entirely. These changes should be a slow progression, after all we can’t change who we are over night.
Letting go of who you once were can be so scary, but it is important to remember that you are not losing your memories and you are still you. These changes are necessary to help you become the next better version of yourself. We have to accept the necessity of change and embrace the process.
I believe I am experiencing a lot of changes to my identity again now. It is a good reminder to reflect on how far I came the last time. Those memories motivate me to push forward and find another (hopefully better) version of myself I desire to be.
