Try Try Again

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.” – William Edward Hicksonimages

We have all heard this saying by William Hickson, but how often do we really try, try, try again? It sounds great and makes sense not to give up after your first failure or mistake, but most times pride likes to get in the way. After all, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.

So, how can we get past our pride, look at the situation differently and try again? Of course you have to determine why it did not work the first time, but the biggest challenge is just deciding to try again and doing it. Trying again is more about acting and doing, than why.

For any runners out there, you understand  that some days you will have a crappy run. It could be no different than previous attempts, but you just struggle. When I have these runs it certainly does not motivate me to try again the next day. So, I treat it as a “do” rather than a try.

Instead of overthinking why my run did not go well before, I merely get out and do it. I make some small adjustments and try again. Many times this is all we can do. We know we did not succeed, but it is not the end.

Trying again means giving yourself another chance. It means trusting that you are strong enough to push on. Trying again means you are willing to fail in order to succeed. So, the next time you are faced with a try again or give up scenario, I urge you to try again.
