Feedback Loop

Elon Musk once said, “I think it’s very important to have a feedback loop, where you’re empowering-quotes-for-womenconstantly thinking about what you’ve done and how you could be doing it better.” While I understand that he is referring to his multi-billion dollar company, I do not love this quote. I especially don’t love it for women.

I understand the need to be constantly trying to be better when it comes to business and to push the limits, but out of context this thought is not exactly encouraging. I am all about bettering myself, but as a woman, I innately over analyze everything I do. I have the worst “feedback loop” there is.

Women tend to be their harshest critics. Likely because we are still overcoming our past and still working to break the glass ceiling. Most of us are not openly expressing this desire to be better everyday, because we are already beating ourselves up inside for everything we have done right or wrong.

Women are unbelievable in tune with themselves. We not only analyze everything around us, but we then analyze the emotional connections and affects every decision has on those involved. Rather than utilizing this “feedback loop”, I would like to see women acknowledge what is working.

I want to be able to have the confidence to recognize when something is going well and speak to others about said accomplishments, without being perceived as harsh or abrasive (which is a true stereotype women get when they are confident). I want to see women unapologetically “toot their own horn”. We deserve to praise ourselves, because after all we are walking feedback loops simply focused on the wrong things.
