“Submission does not mean being weak or passive. It leads to neither fatalism or capitulation. Just the opposite. True power resides in submission—a power that comes from within. Those who submit to the divine essence of life will live in unperturbed tranquility and peace even when the whole wide world goes through turbulence after turbulence.”- Elif Shafak, The Forty Rules of Love
While all forty rules of love from Elif Shafak’s book are intriguing and meaningful, this one in particular stood out to me. Most people would not think of submission as being a good thing or a rule to live by in regard to love. Although, the bible does talk about women submitting to their husbands (not to be taken literally).
I find this rule to be empowering. This rule means to go with the flow. It means allowing yourself to embrace all life as to offer and accept it as a part of life, rather than trying to fight it.
Since my word for 2018 is embrace, the idea of submitting to the universe and letting destiny run its course is appealing to me. This is not to say that I can’t live my life or make choices. It simply means letting go of any expectations and worries that hold me back.
To me, submission is the act of letting go of your inhibitions and choosing to be ok with whatever life is going to throw at you. Whatever sadness, tragedies or mishaps come our way in life are unavoidable. Sometimes they can be delayed when we fight them, but when we fight we cause stress and find ourselves always trying to control every situation.
Allow yourself to ride the waves. Life will throw you whatever it wants. Rather than trying to predict and control every outcome, try to absorb each moment. Allow yourself to understand that there is a reason for whatever it is that is going on in your life. Submit to the universe and reap the benefits, as you will be less exhausted from trying to control the uncontrollable.
